MAGNETIC CYLINDERS

The high-quality magnetic cylinders are made of a stainless steel body, to resist corrosion it provides excellent corrosion protection that does not deprive of the force of the magnet and allows a high and balanced adhesion to the flexible die during use.

With the correct tolerances we guarantee maximum precision in the cut. Cylinder bearers made of hardened steel over 60 HRC ensure trouble-free long-term performance.

For special jobs and small diameters, cylinders can be made with more powerful neodymium magnets to ensure superior grip than usual. Achieving a light weight on a magnetic cylinder is also possible when the body is made of aluminum or hollow on the inside.

We can also design positioning pins on the surface of the cylinder body to prevent the displacement of the flexible die during use.

GENERAL TIPS FOR THE USE OF MAGNETIC CYLINDERS

  • The surface of a magnetic cylinder should be wiped down prior to applying a flexible die, to remove any small particles or debris that could get trapped between the flexible die and magnetic cylinder surface.
  • Never leave the flexible die in the magnetic area after finishing the job.
  • Perform preventive maintenance every 6 months by checking the gap between the bearers’ surface and the magnetic cylinder’s body.
  • Maintain adequate lubrication on the bearers of the magnetic cylinder to avoid overheating while the press is running.
  • Control excess pressure applied on the bearers.

HOW TO CALCULATE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CYLINDERS

The development of a cylinder can be easily calculated from the number of teeth (z). Only the pitch of the tooth or module (m) is required.

Development (in inches) = z * m / π
Development (in mm) = z * m 

The labeling industry mainly uses cylinders with a tooth pitch of 1/8” CP = 3,175mm.

    RECOMMENDED PRACTICES FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF CYLINDERS

    Preventive maintenance on equipment, particularly magnetic cylinders, which are so critical to achieving accurate, repeatable and predictable die-cutting results, is highly recommended. Preventive maintenance takes planning and time to coordinate, yet it is a necessary and important path to the continued and successful performance of both equipment and operators, as well as uptime.

    One variable that is often overlooked is the “airgap/undercut” being out of tolerance on magnetic cylinders. Magnetic cylinders can become out of tolerance either through physical damage or due to natural wear of the bearers over time. Out-of-tolerance magnetic cylinders will affect the die’s capability to perform its function precisely and efficiently.

    A high-quality dial indicator, mounted within a special holder, is the tool that takes measurements to determine the airgap or undercut, on both sides of the cylinder, from the surface of the bearer to the surface of the body, in order to identify if the cylinder falls within tolerance specifications.
