What can’t be printed can be felt
Embossing cylinders mark the material in relief. The finish is no longer just visual but tactile too, which is what makes a product memorable when you pick it up.
The relief isn’t made by one cylinder but by two. The male carries the motif in positive and the female the exact negative of the same motif. The material passes between the two and is formed between them, without being torn or cut.
That is why the two cylinders are machined and delivered as a set: if they don’t mesh to the micron, the embossing comes out dirty or marks too deep.
Areas can be raised, recessed or a combination of both, perfectly in register with the printed design. The effect goes further still when combined with hot foil stamping and decorative printing processes.
